Grapefruits in fresh are low in calories, contain folate, are a good source of fiber, potassium, flavonoids and an excellent source of vitamin C, which has properties inhibiting cancer and intensifies the immunological functions. Red and pink grapefruits also contain the carotenoid non-provitamin A licopene, with antioxidant properties. The primary source of licopene in the human diet are tomatoes, although these types of grapefruit and watermelons also make their contribution. Diets rich in carotenoids are related to a decrease of the risk of contracting cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Grapefruits also contribute with protective flavonoids known as kaempferol, tangeretin, nobiletin and rutin, which are thought to contribute to a balanced and healthy diet.

Grapefruits prevent cardiovascular diseases, fortify the immunological system, prevent colds, stabilize the intestinal flora, activate the metabolism and the cellular growth and contribute to the loss of weight.

Grapefruits, thanks to their important citric acid content, exert an antiseptic effect on the digestive and urinary channels. Its consumption is recommended to prevent cardiovascular diseases through vitamin C. For that reason, it is used to fight vein diseases, varicose veins, haemorrhoid affections and it is very recommended to prevent colds and infections. The substance responsible for the bitter flavour whets the appetite and favours the bile production.

Grapefruits contain folic acid, of special importance in the old age, pregnancy and breast-feeding, since it is needed for the cellular growth. Its absence leads to weakness, fatigue and irritability.

It is a very good purifier if taken for breakfast. In fasting, it is the most effective remedy to fight the usual ‘hangover’ after a night of excessive alcoholic consumption. It also contributes to the loss of weight. Some years ago, there was a promotion campaign about this characteristic of the fruit, recommending to drink a glass of grapefruit juice. This fact increased the consumption, but it soon decreased.

Those people who are prone to heartburn and acid regurgitation must avoid the excessive consumption of grapefruit.
