Celery originated in Mediterranean regions and the Middle East. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans grew this vegetable as an aromatic and medicinal plant. After this wild variety, it was grown in Italy starting in the 16th century. Afterwards, the Italians and French introduced it to the British Islands at the end of the 17th century. It was grown in North America starting in the 19th century.
In Spain, around 81,000t a year are produced, the crop being important in the region of Murcia (49,627t), Catalonia (19,906t) and the Valencian community (11,514t).
