Asparagus, Asparagus officinalis / Liliaceae
As laid down in the quality standard, the asparagus are prepackaged in bunches or loose. In the first case the turions are placed horizontally in wood or cardboard boxes; the rows of bunches are separated with foam rubber or any other cushion material. The apexes are placed towards the inside, in order to avoid contact with the sides of the container. The packages used vary from 4 to 6kg. In the United States they use wood boxes, with a net content of 13.5 to 16.2kg; cardboard boxes containing 6.8 to 7.7kg and cardboard boxes with net weights ranging from 10.8 to 11.3kg. Some countries, such as France, prefer boxes of 4 to 5kg of prepackaged asparagus, in bunches of 500g. The Swiss prefer boxes of 5 to 6kg, and in Belgium they use 4kg boxes.

When the consignments are in bulk, as for instance transoceanic journeys, the asparagus are arranged vertically so as to avoid the bending of the apex. In Chile and Uruguay they use the following packages:

- Cardboard boxes of 6kg net weight
- Plastic boxes of 5.2kg net weight
- Wood boxes with a net content of 5.4kg
- Corrugated plastic boxes of 5kg net weight

In the supermarkets we frequent find bunches with the base wrapped in impermeable paper, expanded polystyrene trays covered with stretchable plastic film, etc.
