The current pear tree comes from Afghanistan, from where it spread to the rest of the world, giving rise to the different varieties. The main producing areas are those of tempered climate, where this fruit tree is better developed. The main producing country is China, followed by Italy and the United States.
In some forests of Rumania and areas nearby one can still find wild pear trees. From this country they spread to Europe, and afterwards to the American continent. The first registry of pear trees in the United States is probably near Salem, in Massachusetts, around 1630. They were taken to America by the French and English settlers. In spite of its early introduction in America, it has not spread as much as the apple tree.
The pear production in the world is limited to the areas of tempered climate. The pear is very popular in China, even more than the apple, specially the asian types.
The pear production in Europe diminished at the beginning of the 90s due to the bacterial fireblight and to the "pear necrotic ringspot virus", whereas in the producing countries of the S hemisphere, such as Argentina, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, it has increased since 1930. From February to June, the exports of these countries dominate many of the N hemisphere markets.
The main producing countries are China, Italy, the United States, and Spain in the fourth place. The world production is as follows:
