Corn salad, Valerianella locusta / Valerianaceae
Corn salad is native to Europe. It grows in autumn and even in winter, reason why it is highly appreciated during the cold and humid winter months in which fresh vegetables are scarce.

It is a very familiar plant in Europe, where its culture has a significant importance, mainly in France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany. It is cultivated in private gardens, chiefly in France, the Netherlands and England, where it is a very common plant. It is also widely spread in Asia Minor, northern Africa and northern America.

In Spain it is barely cultivated, although it is part of the range of pre-washed and pre-cut vegetables, quite usual in countries like France. It is thought that its production may increase. The output may reach 10-15 tons in outdoors culture and 25 tons in protected culture.
